Anglage

Finishing of the highest standard

The Art of Anglage: Finishing at the Highest Level

Anglage is one of the most demanding finishing techniques in watchmaking. During this process, the edges of plates, bridges, and cocks are manually beveled, broken, and then polished. This technique gives movements their characteristic elegance: mirror-polished bevels, smooth transitions, and perfectly defined light edges. Beyond aesthetics, anglage also improves functionality by removing sharp edges and reducing material stress.

The Microtec triangular files from SIA are an essential tool for the manual refinement of movement components. Their triangular shape makes it possible to cleanly work even the most complex inner angles, openings, and delicate geometries.

Advantages for movement finishing:
• Precise internal bevels, ideal for openings and narrow angles
• Even material removal, controlled and reproducible
• Fine grits, perfect preparation for polishing
• Clean edge guidance without tears or micro-scratches
• Available in grits from 500 to 6000

After filing comes the refinement: Enzian polishing wood is the traditional tool used to compact and bring the previously created bevel to a high gloss. Thanks to its natural structure, it enables polishing without abrasive compounds, ideal for materials such as German silver or brass, which are commonly used in watch movements.

Why polishing wood is indispensable:
• Compaction of the metal surface for mirror-polished bevels
• Finest polishing without abrasive residues
• Perfect control on narrow or curved bevels
• Traditional craftsmanship visible in every play of light
