Dichroscope
Dichroscope – Precision Instrument for Analyzing Pleochroism in Gemstones
The dichroscope is an essential tool for gemologists, gemstone graders, and anyone who needs to reliably evaluate the optical properties of transparent minerals. It makes even weak pleochroism visible – an important characteristic for identifying and distinguishing many gemstones.
Many gemstones display different hues depending on the viewing direction. This phenomenon, known as pleochroism, provides valuable clues about the crystal structure and can assist in identifying natural stones, synthetics, and imitations.
The dichroscope uses a calcite crystal to split incoming light into two perpendicular polarized rays. As a result, two color fields appear in the viewing window, allowing for direct comparison – bright, clear, and sharply defined.
Features:
• Precise analysis of pleochroism in transparent, rough, and faceted gemstones
• High-quality calcite crystal for clean, high-contrast color separation
• Ideal for stones with only weakly pronounced pleochroism
• Compact design – perfect for laboratory use, fieldwork, or mobile assessments
• Easy to use, suitable even for beginners
