Rawhide Hammer
Rawhide hammer made from buffalo rawhide with a screwed/glued head and hickory handle. Indispensable in every jewellery workshop for shaping and designing metal without leaving marks.
The hammer head is made from tightly rolled leather strips that are soaked in resin or shellac to harden and then applied to a wooden handle.
The hammer must be conditioned before use. We recommend the following:
Clamp it in a vice and rasp off the hardening compound – the ends can be sanded with coarse sandpaper. After removal, soak the head in water for an hour, dry it and rasp it again.
Afterwards, no leather spirals will be visible, but rather the inside of a piece of leather, and the surface will be soft. It can be shortened as needed during use.
This may sound a bit tedious, but the time spent on it will yield the best results. Remember that a rubber or poly hammer cannot be used after the surface has been damaged unless it is professionally repaired.
Your rawhide hammer will serve you well for a long time.
